PDHPE Foundation Safety Homeschool Unit

Help your child build practical safety knowledge and protective behaviours with this clear, age-appropriate Health and Physical Education unit designed especially for homeschooling families.

Created for children in their first year of school, this unit includes 10 flexible lessons exploring safe and unsafe situations, sun safety, pedestrian and passenger safety, bikes and scooters, water safety, safety signs, medicines and household products, trusted adults, personal boundaries and respectful behaviour. Children learn through practical activities, discussions, sorting, movement, role-play, drawing and observations of familiar environments.

The unit also helps children recognise body signals that may indicate they feel worried or unsafe, practise asking trusted adults for help, communicate personal boundaries and use the age-appropriate No-Go-Tell strategy in fictional situations.

Designed for homeschooling

Each lesson is designed to take approximately 30–45 minutes and can be shortened, extended or completed over several sessions to suit your child’s needs and attention span.

Activities include sorting safety scenarios, packing a sun-safe bag, practising road crossing with a pretend road, exploring safe riding equipment, comparing water environments, creating safety signs, identifying adult-managed products, making a trusted-adult support network, practising help-seeking words with toys or puppets, and creating a final Safety Toolbox.

Written work can be replaced with verbal explanations, pointing, matching, photographs, drawings, demonstrations or parent-scribed responses, making the unit flexible for different learning styles and abilities.
