Foundation Personal and Family Histories HSIE Homeschool Unit

Help your child explore their personal story and the histories of important people in their life with this thoughtful, practical Humanities and Social Sciences unit designed especially for homeschooling families.

Created for children in their first year of school, this unit includes 10 flexible lessons exploring identity, family connections, significant events, family trees, memories, photographs, objects and stories from the past. Children learn through discussion, drawing, sequencing, interviewing, storytelling and examining familiar historical sources.

The unit also helps children distinguish between the past, present and future, recognise how events are celebrated or remembered, and understand that every family has different stories, traditions and experiences.

Topics include:

  • Personal identity and what makes each child special
  • Important people and family connections
  • Creating a simple family tree
  • Remembering life at an earlier age
  • Past, present and future
  • Stories and oral histories from the past
  • Using photographs as historical sources
  • Using objects to learn about earlier times
  • Personal and family memories
  • Sharing family stories respectfully

Designed for homeschooling

Each lesson is designed to take approximately 30–45 minutes and can be shortened, extended or completed over several sessions.

Activities include making family diagrams, creating pictorial timelines, asking questions, examining photographs and significant objects, comparing then and now, recording memories and presenting a personal or family story.

Families can adapt or omit personal questions where information is unavailable or the child does not wish to share. Responses may be spoken, drawn, photographed, demonstrated or parent-scribed.

What is included:

  • 10 complete lesson plans
  • Clear learning intentions
  • Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 Foundation HASS alignment
  • Early historical inquiry and source activities
  • Flexible and sensitive family-history tasks
  • Support and extension ideas for every lesson
  • Simple assessment opportunities
  • Final personal or family history presentation and assessment criteria
  • Suggested resources and learning materials

This unit provides families with a clear and manageable way to teach early history at home while encouraging curiosity, respectful storytelling and meaningful connections between the past and present.
